We arrived in Astoria, OR as we made our way from Seattle to Portland, taking a long detour via Aberdeen. After driving through a mostly wooded area, the approach to Astoria was spectacular to see.
You may recognize this town along the Oregon coast since many popular movies have been filmed there including The Goonies, Kingergarten Cop, Free Willy, plus many more. There is even a museum dedicated to The Goonies, but we were a little late in arriving. Maybe next time!
Still, there is much to see around this very hilly town, including the Astoria Column, which sits atop the highest hill. Built in 1926, this tower offers spectacular views from up top, if you can manage to climb the spiraling 164-step staircase. The climb is fine, if only a little tiring, but the descent is a somewhat dizzying, especially if you are passing people along the way, so keep that in mind before you make your way up.
Even without climbing to the top, the views are still amazing.
Don't forget to visit the gift shop first to purchase your annual parking pass, which costs just $1. We went to the gift shop before we were about to leave, which was not a problem, but it who knows how it would be during high tourist season.
The woman working in the shop asked us where we're from and when we told her Queens, NY, she was excited because we have our very own Astoria too, although it's much different from this seaside town.
